Browse our freqently asked Solar Panel questions below.

Solar panel installation involves mounting solar panels onto a suitable surface, such as a roof or ground-mounted structure, and connecting them to create a solar energy system. Our engineers ensure proper alignment and secure attachment of panels, as well as wiring connections to inverters and electrical systems. Once installed, the system undergoes testing and inspection to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements. As a customer, having solar panels installed on your property can be as easy as enquiring and accepting the quote and install date, then letting our experienced, accredited engineers do the rest.

The time it takes to install solar panels can vary depending on factors such as the size of the installation, complexity of the system, weather conditions, and permitting requirements. Typically, residential solar installations can take anywhere from one to three days for smaller systems and up to a week or more for larger or more complex installations. The process from your enquiry to finished installation, which can include site assessment, solar system design, permitting/DNO acceptance, equipment delivery, and actual installation, can take an average of 2-3 months maximum. We have found found that the companies that boast super quick turnarounds for solar panel installation (i.e, 'enquiry to installation within 10 days!!!!’) are the ones we end up having to fix the problems of on systems once they’ve gone bust.We do things properly at Steve Duckworth Electrical, from design, to applications, to install. Overall, the installation process is very quick compared to the long-term benefits of solar energy production.

Yes, solar panels can be recycled, although the process is still developing and not yet widespread. The main components of solar panels, such as glass, aluminium, and silicon, can be recycled to produce new materials. Additionally, specialised recycling facilities are emerging to handle the recycling of solar panels, recovering valuable materials like silver and silicon. However, challenges remain, such as the need for cost-effective recycling methods and proper collection and disposal infrastructure to manage end-of-life solar panels.Fortunately though, the need to recycle your solar panels is a very infrequent issue, as the industry standard for most solar panels' lifespans is 25 to 30 years

Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. Each solar panel consists of many photovoltaic cells made of semiconductor materials like silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it excites electrons, creating an electric current. This current is then collected by metal conductors within the solar panel and routed through an inverter, which converts it into usable alternating current (AC) electricity. This electricity can then power homes, businesses, or be stored in batteries for later use, providing a clean and renewable energy source.

Whilst solar panels are usually ‘out of the way’ so issues post install are rare, several factors could cause solar panels to stop working, including shading from nearby objects, damage to the panels or wiring, malfunctioning inverters, or issues with the electrical connections. Additionally, weather conditions such as heavy snowfall or debris buildup can reduce solar panel performance. If you are experiencing issues with your solar panels, get in touch with a member of our team for assistance in diagnosing and repairing the issue promptly.

As solar panel installation became popular, many companies popped up offering to install them in the hope of a quick cash grab. Unfortunately, lack of proper training and accreditations led to these companies going bust within years or even months, leaving customers with issues on their solar panel installs with no hope for relying on previous warranties and promises. We’re now in a position where we are regularly contacted by not only new customers who have been referred by friends and family, but by people with existing systems who have faults and cannot reach their original installer. It is always worth getting in touch to see if we can help, and depending on the issue we will do our best to fix your problems.

Determining the "best" solar panels depends on various factors, including efficiency, durability, warranty, and cost. However, the best choice for you will depend on your specific needs, budget, and installation location. We at Steve Duckworth, as trusted solar panel installers, are constantly keeping up to date with the newest technology, which panels have the best warranties, manufacturer reputation, and send our installation quotes out with these factors in mind. Contact us via phone or email to discuss the most suitable option for your circumstances.

In many cases, solar panels can provide significant long-term savings on electricity bills and may increase the value of your property. Additionally, they offer environmental benefits by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.
Consulting with a member of our team can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision.

Solar panels can generate electricity from artificial light, but their efficiency in doing so depends on various factors, including the type and intensity of the light source. While they work best with natural sunlight, they can still produce some power from indoor lighting, such as fluorescent or LED bulbs. However, the amount of electricity generated from artificial light is typically significantly lower compared to sunlight. Therefore, while solar panels may produce some energy indoors, their primary effectiveness is outdoors under direct sunlight.

It’s a difficult question to answer, almost like asking how long is a piece of string, as there are many factors that affect it. The payback period for solar panels typically ranges from 5 to 15 years, depending on factors such as upfront costs, energy savings, incentives, and inflation. Generally, residential installations see an average payback period of around 6 to 8 years in many regions. Additionally, ongoing electricity savings contribute to the overall financial benefits of solar panel investment.
